Easing The Hardships of Elderly in Ukraine IFCJ Canada | February 12, 2026 After a week of record-setting drone and rocket strikes, another attack follows—this time resulting in twice as much destruction. This is the harsh reality for cities and communities across Ukraine. From Kyiv to Odesa to Kharkiv, families, children, and the elderly are struggling through the dead of winter with no power, water, or food. Those already living in poverty have only become more vulnerable to both nature and war. IFCJ Canada has accelerated its aid to Ukraine, including a special matzah shipment for Passover with our partners at FJC, who work tirelessly to ensure it reaches those who need it most. Two elderly beneficiaries in Odesa shared their stories with our volunteers in Ukraine. The apartment building where Bella lives is more than a century old. She has lived there her entire life, and what was once a vibrant, lively place is now empty and hollow. Bella is very lonely—her son passed away eight years ago. In an emergency, the only phone number she has is for The Fellowship-supported Hesed. The winter aid Bella receives from IFCJ Canada includes medicine and food. Despite her difficult circumstances, she must still set aside money to afford her utilities. This support allows her to focus on essential needs without the constant fear of starvation. Although she is fortunate to have power in her area, she uses her electric heater sparingly. “Thank you to The Fellowship. Thank you for helping us, for supporting us. Thank you for saving us — so that we don’t die of hunger. The Fellowship helps us, indeed,” said Bella. Lyudmila also lives in an old building in the centre of the city. The rooms are extremely small—so small that her kitchen is barely large enough for two people to squeeze into. With an aging spine and aching joints, it is difficult for Lyudmila to move and complete everyday tasks like cooking. Her hands shake as she holds a knife to cut vegetables. After many years of working as a teacher, Lyudmila’s pension is small, and she continues to struggle with the rising cost of living. The food IFCJ Canada provides reduces the amount of preparation she must do and helps ease her daily burdens. “The Fellowship gives me material and spiritual support. They give me the dignity that all retired people must have after having worked for so many years of their lives,” Lyudmila said. Elderly Jews like Lyudmila and Bella still need our help as Ukraine remains at war. Help provide relief, hope, and dignity by joining IFCJ Canada today to make a difference for communities across Ukraine when they need it most.
