Myeloma is a type of blood and bone marrow cancer and is diagnosed in 550 Israelis each year. There are several treatment options available, and life expectancy continues to improve, but some patients do not have any response to certain treatments.

The Jerusalem Post reports that doctors at Rabin Medical Center have successfully conducted a new type of treatment for blood cancer using genetically engineered cellular therapy. In other words, equipping the patient’s cells with CAR-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) enables them to seek out and fight cancerous cells.

Doctors at the Beilinson Campus of Rabin Medical Center oversaw three successful instances of the procedure in different patients with myeloma earlier this month. No complications were reported, and they were discharged from the hospital as planned.

Prof. Gal Markel, director of the Davidoff Cancer Center, added that this treatment would not only aid myeloma patients.

“Soon, we will expand CAR-T development and treatment to include solid tumors, such as liver and lung cancer, and later autoimmune diseases, all produced and administered right here under one roof,” he said.

In a short time, we have established advanced capabilities for developing and manufacturing original therapies using cutting-edge technologies. Combined with our clinical expertise, this position Rabin Medical Center as a leader in advanced cancer treatment. This remarkable achievement belongs to the Samueli Institute and the dedicated teams of the Davidoff Hematology Division, who worked in full synergy – from production to patient care.”

As impressive and innovative as Israel’s findings in cancer treatment are, the country’s cancer institutions are relatively new. The Samueli Integrative Cancer Pioneering Institute was founded in 2023, and the Davidoff Cancer Center in 2004. However, in that short time, Israel has become one of the foremost providers of cancer care and innovation – finding treatment options and hope for struggling patients.
