One jar of pickled beets. That was all I saw on Olga’s shelf when I visited her.

A kind neighbour had brought her a bucket of water, but it had frozen over night.

Olga’s struggles are severe, and her life has been very, very hard.

When she was a child, the Nazis came to her town and killed her father. Olga and her mother and siblings hid in the forest during the war. But there was hardly anything to eat and it was a miracle that Olga survived.

Olga has lived her entire life in poverty. Her only daughter died at the young age of 23, because Olga simply couldn’t afford the medicine her daughter needed. Now, at age 80, Olga has no one left. She lives alone, nearing starvation every single day.

On my recent visit, the moment I stepped inside her small house, my heart sank. It was so cold, I didn’t know how anyone could survive, let alone an elderly woman weakened by hunger and sickness. Just like when she was a child being hunted by Nazis, Olga is barely clinging to life.

When I gave Olga a tender hug, a box of healthy food and winter essentials like warm clothes and firewood, she started to cry. But they were tears of joy.

“God bless you!” she told me. It was the first time she’d spoken those words in years. Your holy prayers and generosity brought faith back into Olga’s heart.

I don’t know how much time we have left with these precious Holocaust survivors, but I know it isn’t much. Without your continued friendship, Olga will not survive another winter.

The Bible urges us to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute” (Proverbs 31:8).

Please speak up for survivors like Olga today by sending a sacred gift that will save lives.
