Helping a Single Mother Prepare for the High Holy Days
When the High Holy Days come, Chani worries about how she'll be able to provide her children...
Chani is a single mother with two children - Shahar, age 15 and Yonatan, age 6.
She works at a full-time minimum-wage paying job as a clerk in a building materials company.
Despite her poor financial situation, Chani is an upbeat woman who does everything possible to make sure her children feel happy and unashamed of their circumstances.
She has given the boys her apartment's bedroom while she sleeps in the living room. Chani has used her meager funds to spruce up their apartment so her son's won't be embarrassed to have their friends come over.
But the fact remains that when the High Holy Days come, Chani worries about how she'll be able to provide her children with the items she needs to set the table in a way that does honour to the sacred season and her family. Thanks to The Fellowship, she no longer has to worry.
"My children are my life and I want to give them everything they deserve. Just because we don't have the money necessary for all the things many of their friends have, there are certain things that I must make sure that they do receive,” Chani said.
“Food for the holidays is one of the most basic needs I can think of. Every year I pray that we will have food. Although I don't know who the individual donors are, I know that they love the Jewish people. I pray for you with all my heart and wish you a year of peace, success and security. I wish you good education. I pray that you are always on the giving end and never need to receive the help that you give so generously. Thank you and Shana Tova” (Happy Jewish New Year).
