'I’m Alone in the World'

Sofia

Sofia faces many dangers every day. Her home is old, rundown, and no match for the biting cold of the Siberian wind. Her sole source of water is a hand pump in the backyard...

As Yael Eckstein walked the pathway to Sofia's home, she noticed the ground was frozen and very slippery. Sofia hurried out the door to embrace Yael, excited to have anyone visit her.

Sofia faces many dangers every day. Her home is old, rundown, and no match for the biting cold of the Siberian wind. Her sole source of water is a hand pump in the backyard. Her bathroom is also across her frozen yard, which puts Sofia at risk of falling and injuring herself – just as she did when she greeted Yael.

Sofia is completely alone. She lost her family during the Holocaust and does not have children or friends who can look after her.

If it were not for your help, Sofia would not survive the harsh winter in the former Soviet Union.

Tragically, Sofia's story is all too common among elderly Jews like her. Thousands are forced to choose between using their money for food or heat – a choice no one should ever have to make!

You can send a special care package to a lonely Holocaust survivor through your Operation Winter Relief gift.
