“I Was Always Hungry”
“People ate clay and grass,” Sonya recalled, as she sobbed at the horror she cannot erase from her memory. “Others boiled leather and ate it. I was always hungry...”
Sonya was just 11 years old when her family fled to Stalingrad (now Volgograd) to escape the Nazi killers. But the Nazis blockaded the city to cut off all supplies, including food.
“People ate clay and grass,” Sonya recalled, as she sobbed at the horror she cannot erase from her memory. “Others boiled leather and ate it. I was always hungry, but the Soviets put the children in camps and made us work every day.”
