All Alone in a Warzone
(Photo: Sergey Mamay) When Fellowship volunteers recently found Zhana, an 82-year-old Holocaust survivor in the bombed-out Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv, it was very difficult to communicate with her. Zhana’s age and her many health problems have made communication difficult, as has the past year of trauma as she tries to survive in a warzone. The most frightening moments for Zhana are when the electricity goes out—which is often, between the bombings and the electricity outages. Alone in the dark, all she has is the small flashlight she keeps in her bed. The first time we visited Zhana, volunteers found that her flashlight had died, leaving this precious elderly woman all alone, in the pitch black, not knowing if the next bomb would hit her home, not knowing how or when she might be able to get food or have contact with the outside world. But now, IFCJ Canada regularly visits with food boxes and love, to which Zhana says the few words that she can: “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
