“God heard my prayers and saved us. Every time they tried to break down the door, I chanted the ‘Shema Yisrael’ (Hear, O Israel) prayer, and God heard me.”

That’s Tamar, an 83-year-old woman who was visiting her daughter for Simchat Torah, the Jewish holiday meaning “rejoicing in the Torah,” when her daughter’s kibbutz was attacked by Hamas, and they were forced to hide in their safe room for 36 hours.

Tamar’s life has not been easy, but faith has always helped her overcome difficulties. Tamar was born in Morocco. Her grandfather was the rabbi of the community, and Tamar says, “Ever since I can remember my parents dreamed of the day when they could come to Israel.”

Thankfully, Tamar at last made it to the Jewish homeland. But still, life was difficult. One of her sons died at a young age. Only the Book of Psalms pulled her through this terrible time.

And prayer saw her through October 7. On that day, the terrorists broke into their home, and they shot at their safe room lock to pry it open. Her grandson held the door; and he was injured when they started shooting. “They almost succeeded, but then just before they entered our [help] arrived,” says Tamar.

“God heard my prayers and saved us,” she says.
