Eugenia has been ill. She hasn’t been able to leave her bed in over five long years. All day, every day, she lies on a simple, makeshift bed in her run-down apartment in the former Soviet Union.
This gentle, 94-year-old Holocaust survivor is completely helpless. She’s lost most of her hearing and sight. She can’t even move enough to lean forward and grasp a simple glass of water, let alone make a meal or bathe herself.
To make matters worse, during the frigid winter months, when temperatures can dip below -30 C, we fear for her life. Already, dozens of people in the former Soviet Union have died this winter because of these frigid temperatures. Eugenia doesn’t have heating, so I am hoping and praying that she doesn’t suffer the same fate.
Eugenia has no family no husband or children to care for her. She receives a small pension, but it’s nowhere near enough to pay for rent, heat, food, and the medicine she desperately needs.
I wish I could tell you Eugenia’s situation is rare. But the truth is, far too many Holocaust survivors like her live in extreme, heartbreaking poverty. Every day, they have to choose between food and warmth. And I’m sure you agree no one should ever have to make that kind of choice. Especially when they’ve already suffered so much simply because of their faith.
The prophet Isaiah urges each of us to “share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood” (58:7).
Eugenia, and so many others need your help to survive the winter. Your emergency gift will help bring lifesaving essentials like blankets, heating fuel, firewood, warm clothing, hot meals, and medicine to elderly Holocaust survivors, delivered by loving homecare companions.
