Home Alone and Fending for Herself

Home Alone and Fending for Herself

Sonia has been left home alone three times in the past year after her mother needed hospitalization…

It was two in the afternoon, and Sonia, nine, saw her mother doubled over on the floor in their small apartment, throwing up blood. “Something is wrong with Mama!” she said.

A downstairs neighbour heard her desperate cries and quickly called an ambulance.

Sonia’s mother, Oksana was diagnosed with severe hypertension and Mallory-Weiss syndrome, a tear in the esophagus that causes heavy bleeding.

Sonia was home alone and left to fend for herself. It was spring, and so instead of going to school, Sonia took the seedlings that her mother grows, and went off to the market to sell them. When Sonia finished selling all of the seedlings, she picked up a loaf of yesterday’s bread and a chunk of cheese.

Sonia’s father abandoned the family, leaving them behind to pick up the pieces. Sonia suffers from perennial allergic rhinitis, which is an allergy that is present the entire year. Sonia needs medication for her condition, but it’s too expensive. To make matters worse, their small apartment is damp and the mold causes Sonia to have severe allergic reactions. She is constantly sick and uncomfortable.

The family now receives monthly food packages from The Fellowship thanks to the monthly gifts from our faithful Canadian partners. Now they can spend their money on Sonia’s much-needed medication.

With their eyes filled with tears of gratitude, they hugged the Fellowship coordinator who had delivered the food basket, saying, “Rabbi Eckstein and The Fellowship are angels! You have given us more than you can imagine – may you be blessed.”
