Turning Despair into Hope

A Grandma’s Prayer Answered!

“I’m a grandma, and I want to do what other grandmothers do before the holidays, and that is cook…”

Deshan is 67 years old. She came to Israel with four children and no husband. “My husband left me in Ethiopia and I never remarried,” she explained with a look of sadness in her eyes. With no education or skills, Deshan worked as a housecleaner and a babysitter to support her four kids.

“I live by the grace of God,” Deshan explained. With ailing knees and slowness of breath, Deshan can no longer put her body through the strain she did in the past to earn a living. She lives in a government-subsidized apartment and receives a small monthly stipend that barely sustains her.

Deshan manages to survive, but during the holidays she hopes and dreams to do better than just getting by. “I’m a grandma, and I want to do what other grandmothers do before the holidays, and that is cook,” she said with a smile as she sat next to her Fellowship holiday food boxes.

With all the goods Deshan received from The Fellowship, she will be cooking up a storm for the holidays. “The Fellowship has restored my dignity as a person and a grandmother. I can invite my children and their children to my home for the New Year, and I don’t have to be embarrassed that I have no food to prepare for the festive meals,” Deshan said.

Thanks to our loyal supporters, The Fellowship is able to provide food to the elderly for the High Holy Day season, making the holidays something to remember.

Waiting patiently for a Fellowship volunteer to help her stock her fridge with the goods supplied in the food boxes, Deshan blessed God and thanked Him for The Fellowship. “I thank God every day for The Fellowship. You are His messengers, and He will surely bless you in return,” she said joyfully. “Thank you for giving this old Ethiopian grandma her dignity back, and thank you for filling our holidays with happiness and joy!”

Please support our High Holy Days Outreach today and help the thousands of lonely elderly like Deshan celebrate the season with dignity.
