Elderly Holocaust Survivor Overcomes Starvation

“Without The Fellowship’s assistance, we would not have food to eat”

Arthur was born in Romania before World War II. At that time, Jews in his native country enjoyed freedom. However, things took a turn for the worse as soon as the war began in Europe.

“All Jews had to wear the yellow star with the word ‘Jude’ printed on it,” Arthur recalled. Jews were also not allowed to enter supermarkets, bakeries, or butcher shops until after ten o’clock in the morning. “And by that time, there was hardly anything left to buy because of the shortages in food supplies.”

When the war ended, Romania fell under the influence of the Soviets, which was a relief for Jews, who didn’t want a German victory.

“We learned to live under the Soviet oppression,” Arthur recalled. Zionism was forbidden by the Soviets, and Jews like Arthur and his family had to wait until night to listen to Voice of Israel radio. “We felt proud of what our fellow Jews were accomplishing in Israel. We wanted to be a part of it.”

In 1967, Arthur and his wife Golda made aliyah (immigrated to Israel) with their two children. “It was an incredibly uplifting time to move to Israel,” Arthur recalled. “Jews worldwide and pro-Zionist Christians felt that Israel’s place among the nations was secured.”

Today, Arthur lives with his wife in a small apartment in Bat Yam. Their only income is a government pension, which does not cover their basic necessities. But, thankfully, The Fellowship ensures they have enough to eat.

“Every month we receive a 200 shekel [$50] food card to go shopping. Without The Fellowship’s assistance, we would not have food to eat,” said Arthur. “You are always there to help Israel’s elderly community. We in return are eternally grateful. God bless The Fellowship for the ongoing help they provide to our community!”

Thanks to The Fellowship, Arthur knows he is not alone, and he feels very grateful for all of the care and support. But so many more elderly like Arthur need food, clothing, and compassionate care. Become a Guardian of Israel today and help impoverished elderly survive their twilight years.
