Lesson 7: The Lord Our Helper
(Scripture to Read: Psalm 121:1–8)
A person traveling toward Jerusalem from any part of Israel could lift up his eyes and look to the hill upon which the Holy City sits.
This is the setting of Psalm 121, but the travelers in this case were not on an ordinary journey. They were worshipers on their way to Jerusalem for the annual feasts during which all Israelite men were commanded to be in Jerusalem— these being Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles.
Thus Psalm 121 is designated�“a song of ascents.”�As the worshiper lifted up his eyes to behold Jerusalem, he was reminded of his great God who had chosen to make the city His dwelling place.
God not only protected the traveler from harm as he made his way to Jerusalem for these feasts of worship and praise, but He is the everlasting protection of His people. He is ever vigilant over those who fear Him, both today and forever!

- What specific attribute of God gave the psalmist assurance of His ability to provide the help he needed?
- Why is it important for us to know that God never slumbers nor sleeps?
- The use of the sun and moon here speak of harm that could come to us by day or by night. What is the psalmist trying to tell us about God's care by using such figures of speech?
Something to Think About
God wants us to know that He is the source of all of our help and support. He also wants us to take comfort in His strength and watchful eye. We need to take refuge in God and rest in the knowledge that He watches over us “both now and forevermore.”
