“You need to find a unique path to everyone’s heart. But once you find it, it is worth it.”

Each day Olga, 63, feels blessed to have a job she loves – caring for the elderly as a Fellowship-supported Hesed homecare worker. While it is never easy to work with those who are often suffering with illness and loneliness, and dealing with the symptoms of aging, she likes the challenge of trying to connect with her patients in a meaningful way.

“Working with elderly people is far from easy,” Olga continues, “You need to find a unique path to everyone’s heart. But once you find it, it is worth it. When I come into my clients’ homes they say, ‘Oh, my lovely! Oh, how happy I am that you came!’ They also tell me that I am everything to them, and in many cases this is true.”

Olga is well acquainted not only with her clients’ current conditions, but also with their past. As she recounts their stories, it is clear that she empathizes with their life hardships.

“One of my clients was blind and difficult to manage,” Olga says. “No other homecare worker could get along with her, but I somehow could. I cared for her until she passed away. I used to bathe her and put cream on her skin to help with her skin disease. She used to say to me, ‘Olga, don’t leave me. I need you so much!’ And I always told her that I would be there for her.”

“Then one time, I took a few days off, but something was nagging me to go visit her. So I bought her food and medicine and went to her apartment. When I went in, she didn’t call out to me, so I knew right away that something was wrong. I saw that she had passed away. I cried so much.”

Olga really connects with her clients in a personal and intimate way, allowing them to feel truly loved and cared for. Her high level of involvement is truly remarkable.

Olga is also an expert shopper, buying her clients the highest quality items at the lowest prices. She knows how to make many household repairs on her own, and is a talented carpenter and locksmith.

Olga is very grateful to The Fellowship for employing her to do work that she loves. “It’s amazing that at my age I can still have a job, and I’m very thankful for it.”
