Faces of The Fellowship: Levi

“Levi hadn’t been outside his apartment in two years before the two young Fellowship volunteers he calls his angels came into his life.”

Levi hadn’t been outside his apartment in two years before the two young Fellowship volunteers he calls his angels came into his life. “I have severe heart issues and cannot walk outside by myself,” he explains.

This sort of limitation is surely even more frustrating for a man whose coloruful past includes making aliyah (immigrating to Israel) to avoid being conscripted into the Moroccan army by the king himself.

Levi grew up in Morocco but studied design in France. “After graduation, I went back to Morocco and became a well-known designer,” he explains. “I had my own store and fashioned my own clothes.” Word spread about his great work, and soon the king of Morocco summoned Levi to join the Moroccan army and design all the army fatigues.

“The king’s offer was not one I could refuse, if you know what I mean,” Levi says. But Levi also knew that the Arab armies were determined to destroy the fledgling Jewish state. He felt very conflicted.

“I told the king’s messengers who had showed up at my house at 10:00 at night that I just needed two weeks to close up my business and then I would join the army and start designing their fatigues,” Levi explained. However, Levi and his wife, Rachel, had other plans.

They quickly sold whatever they could at an extremely low price, abandoned their home and business, and headed to France. After spending a few weeks in a refugee camp in France, Levi begged God to bring him and his family home to Israel. Thankfully, his prayers were answered.

“We left our little fortune in Morocco to live in a tin hut right outside of Tel Aviv,” he says. Levi and Rachel now live in Hadera and only occasionally see their children, who live all over Israel. Living on a meager fixed income, Levi and Rachel feel they owe their lives to The Fellowship for providing monthly food baskets and the help of their two high-school-aged volunteers.

“We walked into Levi’s apartment and I felt a chemistry with him right away,” says Shai, one of the volunteers. “We asked him how we can help, and he said he hadn’t left the house for a long time. We took him in his wheelchair down the elevator, and as soon as he saw the busy street, with people walking by saying hello, and the smells of the bakeries and other restaurants in the area, Levi began to cry with joy.”

The Fellowship has given me so much in my old age,” Levi says. “You have provided me with food, comfort, and most of all, you sent me these two angels who have brought so much joy into my life. Thank you, and God bless you!”

Please help elderly, like Levi, with food, medicine, and compassionate care today.
